Bay State Students: Tops in Nation for Math, Reading

However, reading scores for Massachusetts fourth graders did dip.

Lake Wobegon may be where "all the children are above average," but the fictional Midwestern town has nothing on Massachusetts' reality.

Bay State fourth and eighth-graders were either in first place or tied for first place for reading and math, according to the latest national survey of student achievement.

The 2103 National Assessment of Educational Progress showed Massachusetts' students to be well above the national average in those areas.

The report did offer cause for concern, however. The average reading score for Bay State fourth graders fell by 5 points on a 500-point scale, as pointed out in this Associated Press report.
