Weymouth Man Arrested After Victim Grabbed His Cell Phone

Facebook was used to identify a Weymouth man who broke into a Hingham home last week.

A Weymouth man was arrested in connection with a South Hingham house break-in after the victim took his cell phone while he tried to escape with her possessions.

Hingham Police believe Thomas A. Miele, 38, of60 Charles St., Apt. 32, Weymouth, was responsible for the break-in at 1:22 p.m. on Prospect Street in Hingham on Thursday.

Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said when the female resident arrived home, she found an unfamiliar car in her driveway and found two men inside her home carrying bags.

The men fled out the rear door, jumping 10-15 feet from a rear deck, onto the ground and escaped in their vehicle.

As they attempted to escape, the victim attempted to grab a bag back from one of the suspects as they climbed into the car.

“She was unable to retrieve a bag but was able to grab one suspect’s cell phone,” Dearth said in a written statement. “The suspect’s drove away in a black car. The resident was could only remember a partial license plate.”

Police searched the phone’s Facebook app, and found the profile belonged to  “Tommy Miele,” Dearth said. A black 2003 Saab 93 registered to Miele contained the same digits provided by the resident, Dearth said.

The black Saab was located abandoned in Weymouth the same evening. Hingham Detectives obtained search warrants for both the recovered cell phone and the Saab.

Miele was later arrested after detectives obtained an arrest warrant from Hingham District Court for him.

Weymouth Detectives located him at his Weymouth apartment and placed him under arrest.

He was charged with breaking and entering in daytime for a felony, larceny over $250, and malicious destruction of property.

He was ordered held without bail and transported to the Norfolk County House of Correction.  He is due to be arraigned Monday at Hingham District Court.

Detectives are still investigating to determine the second suspect’s identity.  Police believe entry had been made into the house by cutting a screen and lifting an unlocked widow. Numerous pieces of jewelry and a pillowcase were stolen from the house.
