Weymouth Teen Center, Herring Run to Receive $50K

Weymouth State Representative James M. Murphy was able to secure $50,000 each for two different locations in Jackson Square.

Murphy announced  this week that he was able to secure $50,000 for the Weymouth Teen Center and $50,000 for the Herring Run during the Fiscal Year 2014 budget process.

During this year’s budget negotiations, Representative Murphy successfully sponsored these fundings.

The money for the Teen Center will pay for job skills training, remedial education services, and will help  promote a social service program promoting growth and social welfare.

Murphy, who was born and raised in East Weymouth,  said he knew firsthand how important the Teen Center is to the community.

“The Weymouth Teen Center serves as a resource where our youth will have a safe and fun environment which promotes constructive activities” said Murphy.  “We are fortunate that our community offers a designated building for Weymouth’s teenagers.”

The money for The Herring Run will be used for improvements, maintenance, and operation. During meetings with the Herring Wardens, Murphy said he noticed that wear and tear on the gates and ladders has led to emergency repairs to try and prevent the fish from swimming up the wrong aqueduct.

Murphy said he understands how this resource impacts not only the Town of Weymouth, but the fishing industry and ecosystem.

“This amendment ensures that the Herring Run remains a centerpiece of our community” said Murphy.  “I know how many citizens volunteer and put time into preserving the Herring Run, and this money will go towards aiding their efforts and hard work.”
